For parents looking to adopt a baby, the domestic adoption process in Florida is similar to that of many other states. Before prospective parents can start their adoption journey, they must complete a free adoption application. This information helps inform our adoption advisors of pertinent background and contact information so we can best tailor our services toward your needs. Once completed, you’ll navigate an adoption process similar to the one outlined below.
Here’s a step-by-step overview of what to expect:
Step 1: Connect with an adoption professional
Once you’ve completed your adoption application with a service provider like Angel Adoption Agency, they will help you start the process. With guidance and information from your adoption professional, choose what type of newborn adoption in Florida you’d like to pursue, whether that’s open adoption, semi-open, or closed. This helps set the stage for your next steps, wait time, and what kind of adoption journey you can anticipate.
Step 2: Complete a home study
To legally adopt, you are required to complete an adoption home study conducted by a licensed provider. We recommend starting this part of the adoption process as early as possible, as it can take several months to complete. For Florida infant adoptions, the home study includes interviews, home visits, background checks, and other assessments.
Step 3: Create an adoptive family profile
The adoptive family profile is an essential part of the adoption journey, as it’s presented to potential birthmothers looking to place their children in safe, stable, and loving homes. It should paint a picture of your family, home, daily life, and most importantly — you!
Step 4: Get chosen by an expectant mother
Once your family profile is complete, your adoption professional will share it with expectant mothers who are interested in the same type of adoption that you are. When an expectant mother chooses your profile, your adoption coordinator will contact you to establish communication.
Step 5: Hire an adoption attorney
When the expectant mother is ready to move forward, we’ll refer you to an adoption attorney in her state to hire for her. It’s important to note that we’re a nationwide adoption service provider, and our network extends across the United States. Your potential connection might lead you to an adoption in Miami, a state across the country, or anywhere in between.
Step 6: Travel to meet your baby
When the expectant mother goes into labor, or if she’s already given birth, you’ll need to get to her as soon as possible. When making arrangements to travel, look for nearby accommodations where you can stay for up to a week or longer to finalize the adoption. Per Florida adoption rules, birthparents cannot finalize an adoption until at least 48 hours after the birth or hospital stay has ended, whichever comes first.
Step 7: Bring your baby home
If you live out of state, you’ll be permitted to take your baby home only after the legal paperwork is processed, which usually takes 7–10 days.
